Through the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), graduates will join teams contributing to driving simulator development. The program provides exposure to advanced simulation, digital engineering, and virtual validation technologies used in vehicle development and human–machine interaction studies.

Key Skills and Knowledge Areas

Simulation and Driving Simulator Fundamentals

  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics, control systems, and mechatronic systems.
  • Exposure to simulation concepts, real-time systems, or virtual validation environments.
  • Familiarity with driving simulators and HIL, SIL, or MIL concepts is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of human–machine interaction principles is an added advantage.

Embedded Systems and Software Development

  • Basic knowledge of embedded systems architecture.
  • Understanding of embedded software development principles.
  • Experience with C, C++, or Python for scripting, logic implementation, or testing.
  • Awareness of microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, and communication protocols such as CAN, UART, or SPI.
  • Understanding of real-time system constraints and integration concepts.

Game Engines and Visualization

  • Exposure to game development platforms, preferably Unity.
  • Understanding of 3D environments, scene configuration, rendering basics, and physics engines.
  • Familiarity with C# scripting in Unity is considered advantageous.
  • Interest in building interactive and real-time simulation environments.

Tools and Platforms

  • Working knowledge of MS Office tools including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Exposure to version control systems such as Git or GitHub.
  • Basic awareness of simulation or modeling tools such as MATLAB or Simulink.
  • Understanding of software development workflows and debugging practices.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and improvement of driving simulator environments.
  • Support integration of vehicle models, embedded logic, and real-time simulation components.
  • Contribute to Unity-based simulator development including scene configuration, scripting, and interaction logic.
  • Help integrate embedded software with simulator hardware and interfaces.
  • Participate in testing, validation, and debugging of simulator features and scenarios.
  • Collaborate with teams working in simulation, vehicle dynamics, HMI, and software development.
  • Document simulator features, testing results, and development guidelines.
  • Follow Volvo Group simulation standards and development processes.
  • Support ongoing digitalization, simulation, and virtual validation initiatives.

Program Duration

The apprenticeship duration will follow the guidelines defined under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS).
