Job Overview
Alcon is looking for motivated Apprentice Engineers to join the Lifecycle Management (LCM) team through a 24-month apprenticeship program.
This position is designed for recent graduates in Computer Science, Information Science, or related fields who want practical exposure to software development, medical device lifecycle management, testing, and platform sustainment activities.
The apprentice will collaborate with experienced engineers and gain hands-on experience across the lifecycle of regulated medical devices, including software maintenance, platform upgrades, operating system patching, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Support software development, maintenance, and lifecycle management activities for medical device products.
- Assist with implementing, validating, and verifying software changes and enhancements.
- Participate in functional and integration testing of medical devices and related software applications.
- Support operating system upgrade and patch validation activities.
- Assist in root cause analysis, defect investigation, and troubleshooting tasks.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, test reports, and engineering records.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on software quality, reliability, and maintainability.
- Support automation and productivity enhancement efforts where applicable.
Learning & Development
During the apprenticeship program, candidates will gain exposure to the medical device software development lifecycle (SDLC), lifecycle management and sustainment engineering activities, operating system patching and validation processes, and defect management workflows.
The role also provides insight into emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence applications within engineering workflows.
Required Skills
- Strong analytical and detail-oriented approach.
- Basic programming knowledge in C, C++, Python, Java, or C# is an advantage.
- Understanding of software development fundamentals.
- Documentation and reporting capabilities.
- Ability to learn new technologies and processes.
Preferred Skills
- Exposure to Windows or Linux operating systems.
- Knowledge of version control tools such as Git or Azure DevOps.
- Awareness of software development lifecycle processes.
- Academic or project experience in application development, testing, or automation.
