Microsoft takes summer software engineering interns at its India offices every year. There is no separate contest or exam to sign up for: you apply to the "Software Engineering INTERN" posting on Microsoft's careers site. Second-year students have a separate track called Explore.
Status on 30 October 2026: closed for software engineering. Microsoft posted the India Software Engineering Intern role for summer 2027 on 18 September 2026, and it no longer shows on the careers site. Other India intern roles are open right now: Applied Sciences, Security Research, Product Design and Product Management. The next software engineering posting, for summer 2028, is expected around September 2027.

Eligibility
From Microsoft's 2026 India posting for the Software Engineering Intern role:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
- At least one semester or term left after the internship ends. So the internship is for pre-final-year students, or M.Tech students in their first year.
- One year of programming in an object-oriented language. This line was new in the 2026 posting.
- A clear understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.
Microsoft does not name a batch, branch cut-off or CGPA cut-off on the posting. If a form asks for a percentage instead of a CGPA, use our CGPA to percentage converter.
Explore: the track for second-year students
Explore Microsoft is a summer internship for first and second-year college students. The India posting live in December 2025 asked for students in the second year of a 4-year undergraduate degree, who had finished an introductory computer science course and wanted to major in CS, computer engineering or a related field. Over the 12 weeks, interns get to try software engineering and product or programme management work.
What the work involves
Microsoft's posting lists the intern's job as: solving problems with sound engineering, working with stakeholders on feature requirements, learning new engineering methods quickly, managing time on team software projects, and improving the reliability, efficiency and performance of products. Microsoft says interns work on real-world projects with teams across the world.
Selection process
Microsoft does not publish its intern interview rounds on the posting or on its students page. It links to its "Early in Profession" interview tips, and the posting stresses data structures, algorithms and object-oriented programming, so that is where your preparation should go.
Stipend
Microsoft does not publish intern pay for India. Analytics Insight reported (March 2026) a stipend of about ₹1,25,000 a month for Microsoft's 2026 Explore and software engineering internships. Job aggregators quote wider ranges that are not confirmed. Your offer letter is the only reliable figure.

How to apply
- Create a profile on Microsoft's careers site and set an alert for "intern" with India as the location.
- When the Software Engineering INTERN posting appears, apply within the first few days. Microsoft keeps each posting open for at least 5 days and then takes applications until the role is filled.
- Keep your resume to one page with projects, languages and any competitive programming results.
What happened to Microsoft Engage
Microsoft Engage was a mentorship programme for engineering students in India. Selected students worked on coding tasks under a Microsoft mentor, and those who did well could be invited to interview for an internship at Microsoft India. A Manav Rachna University notice from 1 June 2022 confirms the 2022 edition, which Microsoft called Intern Engage. We found no edition after 2022, and Microsoft's current students page does not mention it. Treat Engage as stopped unless Microsoft announces it again.
