Job Description

This role implements and optimizes components within existing distributed systems under guidance. You will apply basic scalability requirements, run performance and load testing, and configure resiliency features such as retries, circuit breakers and timeouts to handle network variability. You will also build telemetry, alerts and runbook-driven procedures, deliver scoped features and fault-injection tests, and help implement basic data replication and synchronization. Support for on-call rotations, automation and IaC scripts for troubleshooting, and adherence to change, security and compliance procedures is expected, with complex issues escalated to senior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

System Design and Architecture

• Assist in implementing distributed system components that support horizontal and vertical scaling under senior engineers' guidance.
• Optimize code segments or systems for large-scale data processing with oversight.
• Implement scalability requirements for assigned components and learn how data plane platforms handle large-scale retrieval, storage and processing.
• Execute performance and load testing with guidance.
• Collaborate with the team to build fault-tolerant components, learning about redundancy, replication and automatic failover.
• Learn recovery-oriented computing principles and apply them to component designs.
• Configure and test retry mechanisms, circuit breakers and timeouts to handle network unreliability, with guidance.
• Implement functional requirements and testing for assigned features within an existing system.
• Implement test scenarios such as fault-injection and brown-out to evaluate correctness, under guidance.
• Help implement basic data replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.

Reliability and Operations

• Implement testing and alarming configurations to detect issues and failures.
• Draft and execute runbooks and operational procedures to support recovery from failures, under guidance.
• Help build dashboards, telemetry systems and alerting mechanisms to monitor component health.
• Assist in diagnosing and debugging system component issues under supervision.
• Follow protocols that prevent interruptions, so customers and users need no maintenance windows when issues are resolved.
• Run basic automation scripts and tooling to troubleshoot operational issues.
• Take part in operational support rotations, assisting with incident responses and root cause investigations.

Compliance and Security

• Assist in implementing basic security measures for data and applications in multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls.
• Assist in executing remediation plans for identified security gaps, under supervision.
• Support creating and updating documentation so cloud infrastructure meets relevant industry standards and regulations.

Automation and Change Management

• Assist in maintaining basic automation scripts and tools, such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Follow change management plans for patching, updating and rolling back applications, under guidance.
