Purpose of the role

The role supports the smooth and efficient functioning of trading desks by providing operational assistance and expertise to traders, sales teams, and other stakeholders. Responsibilities include helping maximise productivity, reducing disruptions, managing administrative tasks, and delivering relevant market information and research.

Accountabilities

  • Provide prompt technical assistance to traders and sales professionals, addressing hardware, software, and network related issues to ensure uninterrupted trading operations.
  • Coordinate trade execution by collaborating with traders, clients, and internal teams to ensure transactions run smoothly.
  • Maintain and update trade records, transaction logs, and client databases with accuracy.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and documentation that support sales and trading activities.
  • Monitor market data and assist with financial information analysis to support trading decisions.
  • Handle operational tasks such as processing trades, confirming orders, and resolving trade discrepancies.

Role Overview

As an Analyst CMBS at Barclays, you will work with the CMBS origination team responsible for underwriting loans secured by commercial mortgages that are later securitized in CMBS transactions. The team evaluates property economics to determine appropriate loan amounts, interest rates, and the level of risk in each transaction while ensuring alignment with Barclays lending criteria.

The team also conducts quarterly analysis of balance sheet loans and participates in underwriting and due diligence activities for acquisition facilities.

In this role, you will support the CMBS underwriting and origination team through financial modelling and review of loan requests. The team prepares loan review forms, preliminary underwriting and cash flow models, and asset summary reports to determine whether Barclays should proceed with a transaction and define the loan structure and spreads.

The team maintains a database of static information for all Conduit and SASB deals issued since 2015, enabling efficient comparison with current deals and supporting stronger due diligence processes. Work is coordinated with CMBS underwriters and originators based in New York and Los Angeles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review offering memorandums prepared by brokers or borrowers to understand property details and financing requests.
  • Evaluate and compile property level income statements, rent rolls, reimbursements, occupancy statistics, and related data into Excel based financial models.
  • Conduct market research using sources such as CoStar, Reis, Smith Travel Research, and publicly available information to validate project assumptions.
  • Review tenant leases and related documentation and prepare summaries of key terms.
  • Assess historical and projected capital expenditure budgets.
  • Create asset summary reports describing property and market characteristics along with key transaction strengths and risks.
  • Support underwriting and due diligence processes for acquisition facilities.
  • Perform quarterly performance analysis of balance sheet loans, including review of financial statements, rent rolls, occupancy statistics, covenant tracking, and transaction updates.
  • Manage CMBS related data and assist with aggregating, sourcing, and maintaining centralized databases.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to junior team members or new joiners.

Desirable Skills

  • Postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Prior exposure to real estate finance or securitized products such as CMBS or RMBS.
  • Strong understanding of real estate metrics and financial statements.
  • Experience with CMBS issuance processes and data management.
  • Ability to prepare narratives or asset summary reports for transactions.
  • Experience working on due diligence processes.
  • Exposure to Argus software.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg or Trepp platforms.
  • Knowledge of market research sources such as CoStar and REIS.
