Serious about building with AI, not just experimenting with prompts? The IIMA AI Summer Residency might be worth a look.
Run by IIMA Ventures and the Krishnamurthy Tandon School of Artificial Intelligence at IIM Ahmedabad, this program brings STEM undergraduates to campus for an intense 4 to 6 week build sprint. The focus is simple: identify real problems, build AI solutions, and test them with actual users.
If you have spent nights debugging models, experimenting with APIs, or shipping scrappy prototypes, this residency was designed for people exactly like you.

The IIMA AI Summer Residency is a high intensity builder program hosted on the IIM Ahmedabad campus. Unlike typical academic workshops, this residency focuses on hands-on product building.
Participants spend 4 to 6 weeks immersed in an AI development environment with mentors, founders, and researchers. The goal is to move beyond classroom projects and build solutions that can survive outside campus.
In simple terms, you will explore problems, build an MVP, test it with users, and present your work to experienced builders and industry professionals.
Honestly, programs like this are rare in India. Most student programs stop at lectures or hackathons. This one pushes you to ship something real.
The residency is divided into three focused phases. Each phase builds toward creating a deployable AI solution.
The first stage focuses on identifying meaningful problems and forming teams.
The objective here is clarity. Participants leave this phase with a validated problem and a strong "why now" argument.
This is where the real work begins.
The environment is intentionally intense. Short timelines push participants to focus on execution rather than overthinking.
The final stage focuses on validating your product.
By the end, teams present their solutions and receive feedback from founders, corporate leaders, and mentors connected with IIMA Ventures.
The program offers more than just workshops. Participants receive access to resources that help accelerate building.
You also interact with researchers, corporate leaders, and AI engineers throughout the program.
The residency is open to undergraduate students who enjoy building technology.
According to the organizers, they are primarily looking for three kinds of applicants.
There is no strict age limit. The key requirement is that you are currently enrolled as a STEM undergraduate.
The application process is fairly detailed. The organizers want to understand how you think and what you have built.
Expect the form to take around 7 to 10 minutes if you already have your links and answers prepared.
The questions are designed to evaluate three things.
Some questions ask you to explain your proudest project, describe a technical setback, or explain how you taught yourself a difficult skill. These answers matter more than your GPA.
I have seen many strong applicants lose opportunities simply because they rushed their answers. Spend time writing thoughtful responses.
If you plan to apply to the IIMA AI Summer Residency, a few simple steps can make your application stand out.
The residency is builder first. Real experiments and prototypes will always matter more than polished resumes.
The program is organized by two major initiatives at IIM Ahmedabad.
IIMA Ventures is a well known startup incubator that supports entrepreneurs through incubation, acceleration programs, and venture funding.
The Krishnamurthy Tandon School of Artificial Intelligence at IIM Ahmedabad focuses on research, education, and industry collaboration in AI.
Additionally, the Brij Disa Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence supports research and knowledge exchange around data science and AI technologies.
