How CTC becomes in-hand salary

CTC (cost to company) is everything a company spends on you in a year. Only part of it is paid into your bank account each month. The rest goes to funds in your name or is paid later.

1. Parts of CTC you don't get as salary

  • Employer PF: 12% of basic, paid into your provident fund account. Most companies cap it at ₹3,000 a month: 12% of the ₹25,000 wage ceiling, raised from ₹15,000 on 17 September 2026.
  • Gratuity: 4.81% of basic when the offer counts it in CTC. You receive it when you leave after the qualifying service.
  • Variable pay or bonus: paid separately, usually once a year and often linked to performance.
  • Employer ESI: 3.25%, only when gross pay is ₹21,000 a month or less.

What is left is your gross salary: basic, HRA and allowances.

2. Deductions from gross salary

  • Your PF: the same 12% of basic, from your side.
  • Professional tax: up to ₹2,500 a year, depending on the state you work in.
  • Income tax (TDS): spread over the year. In the new regime there is no tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, after a ₹75,000 standard deduction.
  • Your ESI: 0.75%, only on gross pay up to ₹21,000 a month.

3. Basic pay and the labour codes

PF and gratuity are worked out on basic pay, so the share of basic changes your in-hand amount. Under the labour codes, wages (basic and DA) are counted as at least half of total pay, so many companies now set basic at 50% of fixed pay. The calculator uses 50% unless you change it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in-hand salary?

In-hand (take-home) salary is what reaches your bank account each month. It is your CTC minus the parts you never receive as salary (employer PF, gratuity, variable pay paid later) and minus monthly deductions from your gross salary (your PF, professional tax and income tax).

How do I calculate in-hand salary from CTC?

Take out variable pay, employer PF and gratuity from the CTC to get gross salary. From gross salary take out your own PF (12% of basic), professional tax and income tax (TDS). Divide by 12. For example, a 6 LPA CTC with 50% basic, capped PF and gratuity in the CTC gives about ₹42,589 a month.

Why is my in-hand salary so much lower than CTC / 12?

Because CTC counts everything the company spends on you. Employer PF and gratuity go to funds, not your salary account; your PF and taxes are deducted every month; and variable pay is paid separately, often only if targets are met.

How does the new labour code change in-hand salary?

The labour codes count 'wages' (basic, DA and retaining allowance) as at least 50% of total pay. When basic goes up, PF and gratuity, which are worked out on basic, go up too, so in-hand pay can drop a little even though the CTC is the same. The calculator uses 50% basic by default for this reason.

Is PF deducted on full basic or capped at ₹25,000?

PF is compulsory on basic pay up to the wage ceiling, which went up from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month on 17 September 2026. So most companies deduct ₹3,000 a month (12% of ₹25,000) when basic is higher. Some deduct 12% of the full basic. Your offer letter or payslip says which; switch 'Provident fund' in the calculator to match.

Do I pay income tax on a 12 LPA salary?

In the new regime, taxable income up to ₹12 lakh has no tax after the rebate, and salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction first. With PF and gratuity taken out of the CTC, a 12 LPA package usually has a gross salary under ₹12.75 lakh, so the tax is often zero. The calculator shows the exact figure: ₹0 on 12 LPA with the default structure.

What is professional tax?

A state tax on salaries, at most ₹2,500 a year. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal and several other states charge it; Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan do not. Pick your work state in the calculator.
