Overview

Overview

The Future of Scalable Software Engineering (FoSSE) team within CoreAI at Microsoft is seeking applications for postdoctoral researcher positions. FoSSE is an applied research team dedicated to resolving real-world software engineering (SE) challenges for large codebases. This includes areas such as code migration, code translation, and static analysis, utilizing AI and formal methods. Our postdoctoral program offers an opportunity to engage in practical research problems while collaborating closely with Microsoft researchers and various product groups.

These positions are based in Bangalore, where the team is co-located with Microsoft Research India. FoSSE provides an excellent research environment and fosters a welcoming, diverse community. The team comprises full-time researchers and engineers, along with postdocs, interns, and research fellows in fixed-term roles. Microsoft is committed to global diversity and inclusion.

Responsibilities

Postdoctoral researchers typically spend 1-2 years with the team, receiving continuous guidance and mentorship from experienced colleagues. The work involves the intersection of programming language design, formal methods, static analysis, and artificial intelligence.

Applicants should possess a strong background in one or both of the following tracks:

  • PL track: Candidates should have a robust background in programming languages, compilers, or related fields. An interest in combining AI with these techniques to address SE problems at scale and with high quality is essential.
  • Reinforcement Learning (RL) track: Candidates should demonstrate a strong background in Large Language Model (LLM) post-training, including areas like Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), instruction tuning, alignment, and evaluation. An interest in applying these techniques to software engineering is also required.
