About the Role

GE Vernova’s Grid Automation R&D team is seeking highly motivated engineering interns to work on cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of electric power grids. Interns will be part of a global energy transition, contributing to control, protection, automation, and monitoring systems for the smart grid. This opportunity offers exposure to technologies like AI/ML, cloud-native software, multi-core SoCs, 5G, and modern software practices in a collaborative, lean-agile development environment.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of assigned engineering tasks related to control and automation for grid modernization.
  • Develop tools, applications, or processes that enhance existing systems using innovative thinking.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, customers, and cross-functional teams to communicate progress and solutions.
  • Work on a self-contained, intern-led project that supports skill development and practical impact.
  • Apply modern programming techniques and algorithms in real-world energy infrastructure applications.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Education Requirement:
    Final-year students of B.Tech or M.Tech/M.E in:
    • Computer Science
    • Power Systems
    • Instrumentation
    • Electronics
    • Communications
      (from IITs, NITs, BITS, or other reputed institutes)
  • Eligible Batch:
    Final-year students graduating in 2025

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong academic background with demonstrated excellence
  • High technical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, and scripting languages (Windows & Linux)
  • Understanding of AI/ML concepts including supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning, and deep learning
  • Familiarity with AI/ML workflows and MLOps principles
  • Experience with databases (relational & non-relational)
  • Ability to debug, troubleshoot, and root cause effectively
  • Good understanding of web, desktop, and cloud application development
  • Awareness of microservices architecture and tools
  • Knowledge of virtualization tools: VMs, containers, hypervisors, Docker
  • Cybersecurity principles and secure application development
  • Hands-on experience with lab tools such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, protocol analyzers, and relay test kits
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and grasp both detailed and broad technical scopes
  • Team-oriented with good interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of power system fundamentals (preferred)

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Prior internships, certifications, or project experience in power systems and software development
  • Experience implementing ML models in energy applications (predictive maintenance, load forecasting, etc.)
  • Knowledge of ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras
  • Experience deploying on Linux-based virtual systems and containers
  • Familiarity with industrial automation tools (e.g., PLCs)
  • Understanding of network protocols such as TCP/IP
  • Knowledge of industrial/substation automation protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870, IEC 61850)
  • Volunteering or extracurricular project experience
