Role Definition

This role designs, develops and enhances electro-mechanical systems and mechatronic devices to optimize products and systems.

Responsibilities

• Design advanced electrical control systems and integrate electrical and mechanical systems.
• Design and implement software and procedures that control and improve the performance of electro-mechanical systems and mechatronic devices, working with scientists.
• Design and prototype mechatronic devices using motors, solenoids, gears, sensors and springs.
• Identify and address areas of product weakness in finished products.
• Hold a degree from an accredited Engineering, Computer Science or Materials Science curriculum.

Key Skill Expectations

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of analysis techniques and tools, with the ability to find the root cause of organizational problems and build alternative solutions. Working knowledge level includes defining problems, comparing alternatives, using charts such as flow charts and Pareto charts to reveal data patterns, and drawing conclusions from data.

Communicating Complex Concepts: Ability to explain complex technical concepts in clear, simple language suited to the audience. At a working level, this means using familiar comparisons, separating core concepts from detail, avoiding jargon and checking audience understanding.

Problem Solving: Ability to recognize, anticipate and resolve organizational, operational or process problems across diverse situations. At a working level, this includes documenting problems and alternatives, understanding stakeholder perspectives, assessing risks and benefits, and using fact-finding and diagnostic tools.

Embedded Systems: Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications, with the ability to develop them at varying levels of complexity to control machine operations. At a basic level, this covers system structure, common errors, the difference between microprocessors and microcontrollers, upgrades to existing systems and embedded programming languages.

Requirements Analysis: Ability to gather, analyze and record business and non-functional requirements for system or software development projects. At a basic level, this includes functional and non-functional requirements, the requirements analysis life cycle and effective documentation.

Technical Troubleshooting: Ability to anticipate, recognize and resolve technical issues in hardware, software, applications or operations. At a basic level, this covers escalation procedures, systematic problem solving, available support resources and common hardware, software and communication problems.

Product Development in Manufacturing: Ability to design, build and manage the manufacturing of new products. At a basic level, this includes past design successes and failures, the development process, the business units involved and basic design tools.

Product Testing: Ability to design, plan and run testing strategies that keep product quality high at every manufacturing stage. At a basic level, this covers testing methods, common errors found by testing, testing tools and the documentation used during testing.
