About the Team

Internal Identity Engineering

The Internal Identity Engineering team builds and operates secure, scalable, and automated identity services that allow employees, contractors, partners, and systems to access Pearson platforms safely and efficiently.

The team works at the intersection of security, automation, and platform engineering with focus areas including:

• Identity lifecycle management (Joiner–Mover–Leaver) with real-time HR integrations
• Identity governance and access reviews using Microsoft Entra Identity Governance
• Single Sign-On (SSO) and authentication platform modernization
• Privileged Access Management (PAM) and governance for non-human identities
• Zero Trust identity foundations, compliance, and audit readiness
• Cloud-first identity platforms including Entra ID, Active Directory, and automation tools

The team collaborates with HR/HRIS, Enterprise Security, Architecture, and Platform Engineering teams to deliver a secure and scalable identity experience across the enterprise.

Role Overview

Apprentice, Identity Engineering

Duration: 12 months

This apprenticeship provides practical exposure to enterprise identity platforms used by tens of thousands of users globally. Apprentices work under the guidance of experienced engineers and contribute to initiatives across identity automation, security, and cloud platforms.

The role suits engineers interested in understanding how security, automation, and cloud technologies operate together at enterprise scale.

Key Responsibilities

Identity Platforms and Automation

• Assist in developing and maintaining Joiner–Mover–Leaver automation integrated with HR systems
• Support Microsoft Entra ID or Azure AD configurations, identity lifecycle workflows, and dynamic groups
• Contribute to Single Sign-On onboarding and application integrations
• Assist with identity governance workflows, access packages, and periodic access reviews

Security and Compliance

• Support Zero Trust identity controls, conditional access policies, and least-privilege access models
• Assist with audit readiness, access review documentation, and compliance automation such as SOX-related controls
• Learn concepts related to privileged access and governance of non-human identities

Engineering and Operations

• Work on scripting or automation tasks using tools such as PowerShell
• Assist with monitoring, incident analysis, and service improvement initiatives
• Use Jira Service Management workflows and operational runbooks
• Participate in documentation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement activities

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Foundational knowledge of programming or scripting such as Python, PowerShell, or Java
• Basic understanding of software development concepts including OOP, databases, or system integrations
• Interest in learning identity management, cloud platforms, and security concepts

Nice to Have

• Understanding of authentication and authorization concepts
• Exposure to Active Directory, Azure AD, or Entra ID
• Basic familiarity with REST APIs or automation principles
• Knowledge of networking fundamentals such as DNS and HTTP/S
• Exposure to cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure
• Interest in cybersecurity, identity management, or platform engineering
