Overview

Role Overview

As a Junior Researcher in System Modeling, you will assist in developing and using executable system level models and virtual prototypes with the MathWorks toolchain (MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape) or SystemC and TLM. The role involves helping evaluate performance, power, and area metrics to support architectural exploration and design decisions. This is a practical learning position with mentorship and collaboration across multiple engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and extension of system level models using MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Stateflow, or SystemC and TLM-2.0 for hardware and software co-simulation.
  • Set up and run experiments to evaluate PPA metrics such as latency, throughput, utilization, energy per operation, average or peak power, and memory footprint.
  • Implement and calibrate basic power models including activity or state based models, DVFS scaling, and clock or power gating effects using specifications, RTL activity, or measurement data.
  • Contribute simple device or IP models, bus or interconnect behavior, and integrate software workloads within a virtual platform environment.
  • Develop or integrate basic plant or physical models such as power stages and sensors or actuators to enable end to end system validation when required.
  • Automate simulations, parameter sweeps, and regression runs while generating plots, dashboards, and concise reports using MATLAB or Python.
  • Perform sensitivity analysis and design space exploration, identify trade offs, and recommend next steps based on data.
  • Assist in correlating model outputs with RTL simulation, emulation, or silicon measurements and clearly document assumptions and confidence levels.
  • Maintain clear documentation of modeling approaches, interfaces, KPIs, and results while following coding standards and version control practices using Git.
  • Participate in literature reviews, internal seminars, and knowledge sharing sessions, and contribute to invention disclosures or publications where relevant.
  • Work with senior researchers, system architects, firmware engineers, and verification teams to reproduce issues and refine model accuracy and runtime.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong fundamentals in digital logic, computer architecture, and embedded systems. Exposure to control systems or signal processing is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with at least one modeling environment such as MATLAB and Simulink, or SystemC with basic C++ knowledge.
  • Understanding of performance, power, and area concepts including latency, throughput, DVFS, and memory or logic contributions.
  • Programming or scripting experience with MATLAB, C++, or Python.
  • Basic awareness of HDLs like Verilog or VHDL and co-simulation concepts.
  • Comfort with data analysis, visualization, and writing concise technical documentation.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Simscape Electrical or Thermal, Stateflow, Embedded Coder, or Simulink Test.
  • Knowledge of SystemC TLM concepts such as payload extensions and timing annotation.
  • Exposure to co-simulation approaches including FMI, FMU, S-Functions, or TLM bridges.
  • Understanding of PPA analysis tools and modeling methods.
  • Familiarity with verification practices such as unit testing, MIL, SIL, or PIL, and awareness of automotive standards like ISO 26262.
  • Experience with CI workflows, Jenkins or GitLab CI, CMake, containers, or visualization tools such as MATLAB App Designer or Python libraries.

What You Will Gain

  • Guidance from experienced system modelers and architects.
  • A structured learning path covering MathWorks tools, SystemC, TLM, and PPA methodologies.
  • Exposure to real product programs in automotive and industrial applications.
  • Opportunities to contribute to publications, invention disclosures, and internal presentations.
  • A collaborative and flexible working environment with strong engineering support.
