What the NHRC Online Short-Term Internship covers

NHRC has run internships since 1998 as part of its duty to spread human rights awareness under Section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. This online batch plans roughly 30 to 35 sessions on human rights issues, with these activities built in:

  • Talks and interaction with the NHRC Chairperson and Members, domain experts and senior Government of India officials
  • Group project work on a human rights issue
  • A book review exercise
  • Films on child and bonded labour, anti-trafficking, health (mental health included) and education
  • Virtual field visits to a jail, a police station and NGOs or shelter homes, where you see how these places work and can put your questions to them

It's a full-time commitment. Sessions run 10 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays, attendance at every session is compulsory and the notice says leave applications won't be entertained. If your college timetable clashes with those hours, sort that out before you apply.

NHRC internship eligibility

The notice lists five groups of students who can apply:

  • Students in the 3rd year and onwards of any integrated 5-year PG course
  • Students in the 3rd or final year of a graduation course
  • Students in any semester or year of any post-graduate degree course (this also covers the three-year LL.B programme)
  • Students in any semester or year of any post-graduate diploma course
  • Research scholars in any stream

You also need at least 60% marks in Class XII and in the first four semesters of your graduation or five-year integrated course. If your university grades in CGPA or SGPA, convert it to a percentage and write the formula you used next to it. Missing either the percentage or the formula gets the form rejected.

Two more limits apply. You must be no older than 28 on 1 October 2026, and anyone who has attended any NHRC internship before is not eligible.

Documents needed for the NHRC internship application

The notice repeats its document list more than once, and a missing item can sink an otherwise strong application. Keep these scanned before you open the form:

  • Attested copies of your Class X and Class XII mark-sheets
  • Attested copies of mark-sheets for the first four semesters of your graduation or five-year integrated course
  • A 250-word Statement of Purpose on the topic "Statement of Purpose for joining NHRC Online Short-Term Internship"
  • A Letter of Recommendation in the Annex-I format, either as a scanned letter or an email from your HOD, Dean or Principal

Filling the Annex-I recommendation letter

The LOR format is printed at the end of the notice: Download LOR Form (Annex-I). It certifies that you are a bonafide student of your institute, states your degree or course and your current year or semester, and recommends you for the November 2026 OSTI batch. Your Dean, Principal or HOD must sign it, write their name and the date, add the place and stamp it with the institute seal.

Writing the statement of purpose

The SOP is part of your selection score. NHRC prefers students who show research potential in human rights, so say clearly what you'd like to study or research in this area. You can strengthen it with moot courts, earlier internships, research projects and co-curricular work.

How NHRC selects interns

Selection is on merit, scored out of 100 marks:

  • Class XII marks: 30
  • Graduation marks: 40
  • 250-word SOP: 30

The short write-up carries as much weight as your Class XII result. Two applicants with similar grades can be separated by the SOP alone, so give it more than the last hour before the deadline. The final list of selected interns will go up on the NHRC website.

NHRC internship stipend and certificate

Every intern who completes the programme gets a stipend of Rs 2,000. The certificate of participation depends on how you perform: punctuality, discipline and active participation in the online sessions count, along with submitting the group project presentation, project reports and book reviews on time.

If this batch sparks an interest in research, our research internships guide collects more programmes to look at next.

How to apply for the NHRC Online Short-Term Internship

  1. Read the official NHRC notice and confirm you meet the 60% marks rule, the age limit and the year-of-study condition.
  2. Download LOR Form (Annex-I) from the last page of the notice, get it signed, dated and sealed by your HOD, Dean or Principal, and scan it.
  3. Scan attested copies of your Class X, Class XII and first four semester mark-sheets.
  4. Convert your CGPA or SGPA to a percentage and note the formula you used.
  5. Write your 250-word SOP, mentioning your research interests in human rights and any moot courts, internships or projects.
  6. Open the Online Short-Term Internship link on nhrc.nic.in or use the NHRC India mobile app, and fill in the form without prefixes such as Mr., Mrs. or Ms.
  7. Upload your documents and submit before 6 pm on 25 October 2026. Applications sent by email or post will not be accepted.

Check every mark and percentage before you submit. If NHRC finds a discrepancy, it rejects the application and bars the applicant from its future programmes.

For queries, call 011-24663371 or email internships.nhrc@gov.in between 10 am and 6 pm, Monday to Friday. Technical problems with the form go to 011-24663294.
