Software Engineering Internship Program
This 12+ week paid internship offers opportunities for professional development, an executive speaker series, and community building. Interns work on complex computer science challenges, build scalable distributed systems, and collaborate on projects that support widely used products.
The internship is scheduled from May to August 2026. Participants contribute to real engineering work while gaining practical experience solving large scale technical problems.
About the Role
As a Software Engineering Intern, you will work on a project that is important to Google’s engineering needs. Interns collaborate with experienced engineers to design, build, and maintain infrastructure supporting large scale applications and AI integrated systems.
Google engineers develop technologies used by billions of people across products such as Search, Ads, Chrome, Android, YouTube, and many more. The role involves building systems that operate at global scale, including platforms for developers, large scale applications, and advanced storage and computing solutions.
The position welcomes engineers with ideas from areas such as information retrieval, distributed computing, large scale system design, networking, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, data storage, UI development, and mobile technologies.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of scalable engineering solutions used across Google products.
- Work with cross functional teams to support AI driven applications and large scale software systems.
- Analyze technical information and evaluate results to determine effective solutions.
- Apply computer science knowledge from academic coursework to real world engineering problems.
- Support team productivity and innovation by collaborating with peers and engineering leaders.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Master's degree in a research program focused on software development or a related technical field.
- Experience with at least one programming language such as Java, C/C++, Python, JavaScript, or Go.
- Exposure to areas such as distributed systems, concurrency, multithreading, or synchronization.
- Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Research experience in areas such as algorithms, artificial intelligence, compilers, databases, data mining, distributed systems, networking, machine learning, or systems.
- Experience designing or implementing complex systems for production or research use.
- Familiarity with performance optimization, reliability engineering, data analysis, visualization tools, or debugging techniques.
