Overview

Cummins Inc. is seeking an Electronic Systems Engineer – Software to develop embedded software used in drivetrain and electrified power solutions. This early career engineering role focuses on translating stakeholder needs into embedded software specifications, architecture, design, implementation, verification, validation, and release. The engineer contributes to reliable, safety-compliant software that supports engines, transmissions, braking systems, inverters, converters, and battery management systems across multiple applications.

Embedded Software Development

  • Design and develop embedded software for drivetrain components such as engines, transmissions, and braking systems, as well as electrification technologies including inverters, converters, and battery management systems.
  • Convert system-level requirements into detailed, traceable software requirements, architecture, and design using systems engineering practices.
  • Implement and optimize software using C/C++ on microcontrollers and microprocessors, including real-time control applications where RTOS is required.
  • Support the full software lifecycle including requirements definition, architecture, coding, integration, verification, validation, release, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Deliver tested software features and components to product teams while meeting defined quality and performance expectations.

Verification, Validation and Quality

  • Use model-based development methods with MATLAB/Simulink and Stateflow to validate control algorithms and system behavior.
  • Support compliance with safety-focused standards such as ISO 26262 and ASPICE.
  • Create and execute validation plans to identify potential failure modes and reduce product risks.
  • Investigate software issues, determine root causes, implement data-driven fixes, and document outcomes.
  • Utilize Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), static analysis tools, compilers, integration tools, and simulation environments to maintain software quality.

Systems Engineering and Architecture

  • Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable system and software requirements with defined acceptance criteria.
  • Assist in platform architecture development, trade-off analysis, and requirement traceability.
  • Analyze functional requirements, system interfaces, and control interactions to minimize potential failure modes.
  • Apply systems thinking to define boundaries, interfaces, lifecycle considerations, and integration impacts across business units.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Support debugging and validation work in laboratory and vehicle environments using tools such as oscilloscopes and power analyzers.
  • Work closely with teams in hardware, controls, validation, manufacturing, and supply chain.
  • Coordinate technical activities with technicians, student employees, and project stakeholders when needed.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews and communicate technical information clearly to varied audiences.

Product Development and Continuous Improvement

  • Plan and track assigned software development tasks in line with project scope, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Apply statistical and data analysis techniques to support engineering decisions.
  • Contribute to improving development processes, tools, and engineering methodologies.
  • Prepare technical documentation that supports knowledge transfer and long-term product maintenance.

Experience

  • Entry level or early career engineering experience.
  • Internship, co-op, research, or academic project experience in embedded systems, controls, or automotive or industrial software development is preferred.
  • Exposure to real-time control systems, electrification technologies, or drivetrain applications is beneficial.
  • Basic familiarity with MS Office tools is advantageous.
