Graduate Software Engineer, Open Source and Linux

Canonical is hiring 2025 and 2026 graduates into software engineering teams across the world. Engineers work on open source products and commercial systems using technologies such as Python, Golang, Rust, C/C++, JavaScript, and Bash.
Teams contribute across the Linux stack, from firmware, kernels, and drivers to desktop applications, containers, Kubernetes clusters, and cloud infrastructure. Projects may involve security, cryptography, compilers, toolchains, packaging, or deep contributions to a focused codebase.
Most engineering teams are home based and aligned by timezone across EMEA, APAC, and AMER regions. Engineers collaborate closely with mentors and peers through pair programming, issue tracking, and open source communities.
The role includes
- Helping shape product roadmaps during global engineering sprints
- Building resilient, high-performance software for large scale usage
- Focusing on design and user experience, including developer tools and command line applications
- Developing expertise in Linux systems and programming languages
- Participating in code reviews and community discussions
- Supporting customer issues and understanding enterprise requirements
- Applying secure software design and implementation practices
Requirements
- Outstanding academic performance in school and university
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Business Informatics, or another STEM discipline with programming coursework
- Ability to write quality code in Python, Rust, C/C++, Golang, JavaScript, or Java
- Experience using Ubuntu or another Linux distribution
- Personal software projects beyond academic coursework
- Professional written and spoken English
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events

- Open source contributions
- Linux distribution or packaging contributions such as Debian, Fedora, Arch, or Nix
- Leadership, presentation, and organizational experience
- Interest in business and commercial topics
