The Digital India Internship Scheme for NIC puts students inside the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) body that builds government software such as eOffice, Vahan, Sarathi, eHospital, PFMS and PM-KISAN. NIC takes 50 interns in each batch, a winter batch from December and a summer batch from June. Interns work on site at NIC headquarters in New Delhi or at an NIC state centre and get ₹10,000 a month.
Status on 6 November 2026: applications for the Winter 2026 batch are open until 13 November 2026 on dii.nic.in. The internship runs from 1 December 2026 to the end of January 2027. You can only apply on dii.nic.in. nic.gov.in has no internship page, even though some posters list it.

Who can apply
You must be an Indian student at a recognised Indian university with at least 60% in your last degree or certificate exam. Only these years are eligible for the winter 2026 batch:
| Course | Year you must be in |
|---|---|
| B.E./B.Tech (including lateral entry) | 3rd year |
| M.E./M.Tech/M.Sc (CS)/M.Sc (IT) | 1st year |
| MCA | 2nd year |
| Dual degree (M.E./M.Tech) | 4th year |
| DoEACC 'B' level | Diploma/graduation/DoEACC 'A' level done |
Final-year students and anyone passing out in summer 2027 cannot apply. The registration form only lists Computer Science, IT and Electronics & Communication, and the portal tells you not to register if your degree is not on its list. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a seat. NIC prefers students who already have some experience in the area they pick.
Areas you can choose
You pick up to two of these 22 areas when you apply:
- AI and machine learning, chatbots, data analytics
- Cloud computing, DevOps, microservices, networking
- Cyber security, quantum computing and cryptography, blockchain
- Angular/React, Node.js, PHP, Java, .NET, Python
- MySQL, PostgreSQL or MSSQL
- Mobile app development, open APIs, UI/UX
- Internet of Things, GIS technologies
Pick the areas where you can show real work: a project, a GitHub repo or a course. That experience counts in selection.
Stipend: ₹10,000 a month, paid at the end
NIC calls it a "token remuneration" of ₹10,000 a month. Two conditions in the guidelines:
- Your mentor has to certify that your performance was satisfactory.
- It is paid after the internship ends, once NIC accepts your report. You get nothing month by month.
There is no travel or hostel allowance, and you have to arrange your own stay near the NIC office you are placed at. If you are not from Delhi or a state capital, budget for two months of rent before you accept.
How to apply
- Go to dii.nic.in and register with your degree, branch, mobile number and email (OTP check).
- Fill in the form and choose up to two areas of interest.
- Upload a recommendation letter from your college on the institute's letterhead.
- Upload certificates of your completed degrees and your latest result.
- Write a Statement of Purpose of 100 to 250 words on why you want the internship and what you will get from it.
- If your college uses CGPA, upload a self-declaration of the CGPA-to-percentage formula with the official link from your university. Our CGPA to percentage converter lists the formula for many universities.
- Submit before 13 November and track the status with "Track Your Application" on the portal.
The recommendation letter takes the longest, so ask your HOD or training and placement office for it first. Wrong marks or certificates get your application rejected.
What the internship is like
- Each intern or group gets an NIC scientist or technical officer as mentor, who sets the work plan.
- You work at the NIC office during office hours unless your mentor allows otherwise in writing.
- At the end you submit a project report and present it to NIC officers. The report for your college must be identical to the one you give NIC.
- NIC keeps all rights to the code and work you produce. You can present it at seminars only with NIC's permission and without confidential details.
- You give NIC a "No Demand Certificate" with soft and hard copies of the report, and then get your completion certificate.
- The internship does not lead to a job at NIC. NIC can end it early if your work is not satisfactory.
Summer batch
NIC runs the same scheme in summer. The summer 2026 batch ran from 1 June to 31 July 2026, with applications closing in late April. The winter 2025 batch also started on 1 December 2025. Expect the summer 2027 batch to open around April 2027 on dii.nic.in. We will update this page when it does.
Not to be confused with the NeGD internship, which is a separate MeitY programme: see our NeGD technical internship page. For more paid options, see the summer internships guide.
