Associate Software Engineer (HPEL Program)

As part of its expansion in India, Smartsheet is launching the HPEL Program for Fiscal Year 2027. This initiative is designed for early‑career engineers who want to build strong technical fundamentals rather than specializing too early. The program targets graduates who have spent their university years experimenting, building projects, and developing engineering skills but have not yet held a full‑time professional role.

Smartsheet hires for engineering potential instead of focusing on a single technology stack. Participants are evaluated on general engineering aptitude, problem‑solving ability, and coachability. The goal is to help engineers build a strong, language‑agnostic foundation that supports long‑term growth in software development.

Key Responsibilities

• Learn and Contribute: Take part in the full software development life cycle, beginning with guided tasks and gradually owning feature components.
• Build Foundations: Work across the stack with a focus on back‑end and full‑stack systems to understand how scalable platforms are designed and built.
• Collaborate: Participate in technical discussions and whiteboard sessions to break down complex problems into workable code solutions.
• AI Augmentation: Use AI tools to assist with coding, troubleshooting, optimization, and faster learning.
• Quality Engineering: Identify edge cases, write effective tests, and debug issues within a microservices‑based architecture.

Basic Requirements

• Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and object‑oriented design.
• Ability to translate complex problems into initial brute‑force solutions and progressively optimize them.
• Proficiency in at least one C‑style language such as Java, Go, or C++, or experience with Node.js.
• Growth mindset with the ability to accept feedback, learn quickly, and iterate on solutions.
• BTech or BE in Computer Science.
