About the Role

The Red Hat Critical Accounts Program (CAP) team is recruiting a Trainee Associate Software Maintenance Engineer (ASME) for a 6‑month apprenticeship program within the Product Experience Engineering team. This role acts as a link between product development teams and the quality experienced by customers.

The team focuses on improving platform stability and product quality rather than developing new product features. Work centers on complex areas such as cluster lifecycle, system upgrades, and network migrations. Trainees apply a data‑driven approach using insights from internal tooling to identify customer issues and create test cases and fixes for engineering backlogs.

This full‑time apprenticeship offers hands‑on learning with experienced open source developers. Participants receive mentorship and practical exposure to technologies including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), OpenShift Container Platform, and virtualization platforms. Based on performance and evaluation, the role may convert into a full‑time position after the program.

Key Responsibilities

• Investigate and troubleshoot OpenShift and Linux software issues using debugging tools and general guidance.
• Create test cases and corresponding code fixes to address issues found in complex customer environments.
• Use AI‑assisted tools such as Claude, Gemini, and Cursor to speed up test creation, automate routine tasks, and maintain data consistency.
• Work with standard open source engineering workflows including Git operations such as rebasing and cherry‑picking to submit code fixes.
• Collect detailed information for reported bugs, suggest fixes or workarounds, and collaborate with global cross‑functional teams.
• Build and maintain automated test suites and CI/CD pipelines to support product stability and clean, maintainable code.

Basic Qualifications

• Recent graduate within the last two years (2025 or 2026) with a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information technology, science, computer applications, or a master's degree in computer applications.
• Familiarity with scripting languages such as Bash or Python.
• Programming knowledge in C, C++, Go, or Golang relevant to modern product stacks.
• Understanding of Linux fundamentals including storage and networking, along with containers and open source development practices.
• Exposure to Git workflows using platforms such as GitHub or GitLab and basic CI/CD pipeline concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure, or container platforms like Kubernetes and Docker.
• Experience with SQL, data visualization tools, or debugging and observability tools.
• Red Hat certifications including RHCSA, RHCE, or OpenShift certifications (DO188, DO280).
• Contributions to open source communities and an interest in improving customer experience through technology.
