Overview
About the Role
The Red Hat Critical Accounts Program (CAP) team is recruiting for a 6‑month apprenticeship program for the position of Trainee, Associate Software Maintenance Engineer within the Product Experience Engineering team. In this role, you will help bridge the gap between product development and the quality experienced by customers.
The team focuses on improving platform reliability and product quality rather than building new feature architectures. Work areas include complex domains such as cluster lifecycle management, upgrades, and network migrations. Trainees will use data insights from internal systems like CEE.next and CAP Quality Insights to identify customer pain points and create targeted test cases and code fixes.
This full‑time apprenticeship provides hands‑on exposure to open‑source technologies while working with experienced developers. Participants receive mentorship and practical training with Red Hat technologies such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), OpenShift Container Platform, and virtualization solutions. Strong performers may be considered for a full‑time role after the program.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate and troubleshoot OpenShift and Linux software issues following general guidance, using debugging tools to identify solutions.
- Create test cases and implement code fixes for real customer environments to address items in the engineering backlog.
- Use AI‑assisted tools such as Claude, Gemini, and Cursor to speed up test creation, automate routine tasks, and maintain data consistency through prompt engineering.
- Work with open‑source engineering workflows including Git operations such as cherry‑picking and rebasing while submitting fixes that meet engineering quality standards.
- Collect information for reported bugs, recommend fixes or workarounds, and collaborate with distributed global teams.
- Develop and maintain automated test suites and CI/CD pipelines to support product quality and maintain clean, maintainable code.
Required Qualifications
- Recent graduate within the last two years (2025 or 2026) with a bachelor's degree in engineering, technology (Computer Science or IT), science, or computer applications, or a master's degree in computer applications.
- Knowledge of scripting using Bash or Python, along with programming skills in C, C++, Go, or Golang.
- Basic understanding of Linux fundamentals including storage and networking, as well as containers and open‑source development practices.
- Familiarity with Git workflows using platforms such as GitHub or GitLab and basic CI/CD pipeline concepts.
Preferred Skills
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, or container technologies including Kubernetes and Docker.
- Experience with data visualization tools, SQL, or debugging and observability tools.
- Red Hat certifications such as RHCSA, RHCE, or OpenShift certifications (DO188, DO280).
- Participation in open‑source communities and an interest in improving customer experience through innovation.
