Overview

The Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) is an economics lab that supports Mastercard’s mission to create a more inclusive and sustainable digital economy. The institute develops economic thought leadership and insights using anonymized and aggregated data from the Mastercard network together with public data.

Launched in 2020, the institute analyzes consumer-focused economic trends and provides actionable insights for customers, partners and policymakers. Its team of economists and data scientists delivers insights through presentations, global thought leadership, media engagement and commercial products.

About the Role

Mastercard is seeking an R programmer to join the Economics Institute, reporting to the team lead for Data Systems Engineering. The role focuses on building analytical tools, visualizations and scalable applications to communicate economic insights effectively.

• Create clear and compelling data visualizations that present economic insights to varied audiences.
• Develop reusable R functions and packages to support analysis and automation.
• Produce and format analytical content using R Markdown or Quarto.
• Design and develop scalable Shiny applications.
• Build interactive visualizations using JavaScript charting libraries such as Plotly, Highcharts or D3.js, or front-end frameworks like React, Angular or Vue.js.
• Work with databases and data platforms including SQL and Hadoop.
• Write clear, well-documented code that can be easily maintained by others.
• Collaborate with teams using Git for version control.

All About You

• Proficiency in R along with the RStudio IDE or Positron IDE.
• Experience using R packages such as dplyr for data cleaning, transformation and aggregation.
• Familiarity with dependency management and documentation in R, for example roxygen2.
• Understanding of version control concepts and tools including Git, GitHub or Bitbucket.
• Experience writing SQL and working with relational databases.
• Interest in data, coding and technology with the ability to collaborate across teams including engineers, product owners, data scientists and economists.
