Job Description
Job Family Definition
This role involves designing, developing, troubleshooting, and debugging software programs that support enhancements and new product development. Work may include operating systems, networking components, utilities, databases, and internet-related tools, while ensuring compatibility with hardware and influencing hardware design when necessary.
Management Level Definition
The position contributes to assignments with limited scope by applying technical concepts and knowledge gained through education or previous experience. The engineer collaborates as part of a team, providing analysis, insights, and recommendations, while exercising independent judgment within defined guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain new features and improvements for the SONiC network operating system platform.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve issues related to platform system software.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers, QA and testing teams, and other cross functional groups to deliver end to end solutions.
- Participate in code reviews, contribute to architectural discussions, and help maintain technical documentation.
- Engage in initiatives that add value to product development within the business unit and the wider organization.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Telecommunication Engineering, or a related discipline with exposure to networking and system software development.
- Proficiency in C and C++ programming, object oriented design, data structures, and system debugging.
- Strong understanding of operating system fundamentals, particularly Linux or similar environments.
- Knowledge of hardware and system level design concepts used in carrier class software development.
- Experience with Linux device drivers, system bring up, and Linux kernel environments. Exposure to large code bases is preferred.
- Familiarity with scripting technologies and modern DevOps practices.
- Background in networking or embedded platform software development is advantageous.
Technical Areas of Knowledge
- Host complex and system peripherals including CPU architectures (x86), PCIe, SPI, I2C, MDIO, FPGA, CPLD, and flash drivers.
- Ethernet interfaces ranging from 1G to 400G and beyond, including technologies such as MacSec, timing systems, and optical modules like SFP, QSFP, QDD, and OSFP.
- High speed packet forwarding using network processors, PHYs, and SerDes technologies.
