Internship Title: Probabilistic Analysis and Uncertainty Quantification for F&DT

Fatigue and Damage Tolerance (F&DT) analysis has traditionally relied on deterministic approaches with conservative scatter factors. To move toward a more risk-informed strategy, advanced probabilistic methods are required. This internship focuses on developing computational techniques that evaluate the effect of uncertainties such as material property variation, load-to-stress differences, and manufacturing tolerances on airframe structural assessments.

Core Activities

  • Review existing literature on probabilistic approaches, including applications of Uncertainty Quantification and Management (UQM) in fatigue-related use cases.
  • Identify suitable use cases, starting with simpler scenarios, to implement probabilistic assessments.
  • Determine key parameters and their variability, and perform Design of Experiments along with surrogate modeling.
  • Create probability distributions for influential input parameters and run simulations to estimate outcome probabilities that support risk evaluation and decision-making.
  • Compare simulation outputs with experimental distributions and document the study results.

Pre-requisites

  • Strong understanding of statistics, mathematics, and probabilistic techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of strength of materials, finite element methods, and structural fatigue.
  • Ability to review research papers and derive meaningful conclusions.
  • Hands-on experience with FE tools such as Abaqus or Nastran.
  • Programming knowledge and analytical reasoning ability.

Tools

Python, Abaqus, Nastran
