An estimate for salaried residents. Caps 80C at ₹1.5 lakh, 80D at ₹75,000 (₹1 lakh at 60 and above), home loan interest at ₹2 lakh and NPS at ₹50,000. Does not include capital gains or arrears relief. Check with your Form 16 before filing.
Which regime should a fresher pick?
If your salary is under ₹12.75 lakh, the new regime makes your tax zero after the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the Section 87A rebate. You do not need to invest anything to save tax.
Above that, the old regime only wins if your deductions are large: usually full 80C (₹1.5 lakh), HRA because you pay rent in a metro, and a home loan. For most freshers on ₹6–15 LPA, the new regime saves more.
Tell your employer your choice at the start of the year so the right TDS is cut. You can still switch when you file your return.
How to Calculate Income Tax in India?
Income tax for FY 2025-26 is worked out on your taxable income: gross salary and other income, minus the standard deduction (₹75,000 in the new regime, ₹50,000 in the old) and, in the old regime only, deductions like 80C, 80D and HRA. The slab rates apply to that amount, then the Section 87A rebate, surcharge above ₹50 lakh and the 4% health and education cess.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard deduction for FY 2025-26?
The standard deduction for FY 2025-26 is ₹75,000 for salaried individuals under the new tax regime. This amount is automatically deducted from your gross salary before calculating taxable income.
Is the new tax regime mandatory?
No, the new tax regime is optional. You can choose between the old and new regime each year while filing your tax returns. However, the new regime is the default option from FY 2023-24 onwards.
What is the tax rebate under Section 87A?
Under Section 87A, individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh (after standard deduction) get a full tax rebate in the new regime. This means zero tax liability for income up to ₹12.75 lakh (₹12 lakh + ₹75,000 standard deduction).
Can I claim deductions under the new tax regime?
The new tax regime offers lower tax rates but doesn't allow most deductions like 80C (investments), 80D (insurance), HRA, etc. Only the standard deduction of ₹75,000 is available. Compare both regimes to see which is more beneficial for you.
What is marginal relief?
If your taxable income is a little over ₹12 lakh, your tax in the new regime cannot be more than the amount above ₹12 lakh. At ₹12.1 lakh taxable, tax is capped at ₹10,000 plus cess.
Is employer PF taxed?
Employer PF up to 12% of basic is not part of your taxable salary, which is why the calculator asks for CTC minus employer PF.
How accurate is this income tax calculator?
It uses the slabs and rates notified by the Income Tax Department for FY 2025-26, the 87A rebate with marginal relief, surcharge above ₹50 lakh and the 4% cess, for salaried residents under both regimes. For capital gains, business income or arrears, check with a tax professional.
When should I file my income tax return?
The due date for filing income tax returns for individuals (whose accounts don't need auditing) is typically July 31st of the assessment year. For FY 2025-26, you would file returns by July 31, 2026.
