The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has opened applications for the National Internship in Official Statistics (NIOS) 2026‑27. If you study statistics, mathematics, economics, or a related field, this is one of the few government internships where you actually work with real national datasets.
And yes, it is paid. Selected interns receive ₹10,000 per month while working with divisions of the National Statistics Office and several government ministries.
Only 230 internship seats are available in Phase I. The deadline is close, so if you are interested in data, surveys, or public policy research, this is worth checking out.

The MoSPI NIOS Internship 2026 is a government internship program designed to expose students and researchers to India's official statistical system.
Interns work with real datasets used in national surveys and economic reports. These include well‑known surveys like PLFS (Periodic Labour Force Survey), ASI (Annual Survey of Industries), and CPI price data.
The idea is simple. Young researchers learn how government statistics are collected, processed, analyzed, and published.
From what I have seen, very few internships actually give access to large public datasets like these. If you are considering a career in economics research, policy, analytics, or data science, this exposure can be surprisingly valuable.
Selected candidates receive a stipend of ₹10,000 per month.
Students placed in certain regional offices may also receive ₹500 per day for field visits. This applies when interns participate in survey fieldwork. The maximum field visit allowance is limited to 10 days during the internship.
Quick heads‑up though. Travel, accommodation, and food are not covered. Interns need to arrange these on their own.
Eligibility for the National Internship in Official Statistics (NIOS) depends on your academic level and background in statistics or mathematics.
Students currently studying can apply only for internships lasting 2 to 3 months.
The MoSPI NIOS Internship 2026 lasts between 2 months and 6 months, depending on the assignment and location.
The internship period starts in March 2026 and must finish by September 2026.
Interns may work in several statistical domains, including:
Work typically involves data cleaning, statistical analysis, survey data interpretation, and report preparation.
The internship positions are divided into two groups.
Internships located in New Delhi, mainly within MoSPI divisions and other central ministries.
Examples include:
Internships available across regional offices throughout India.
These include locations such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati, Patna, Pune, Bhopal, and many more.
Students can apply for only one group. Applying for both will lead to disqualification.
Before starting the application, keep these documents ready.
The NOC must be signed and sealed by your Head of Department or institution confirming that they allow you to participate in the internship.
I have seen students lose chances because the NOC wasn’t properly signed or stamped. Double‑check that part.
Selection for the MoSPI NIOS Internship 2026 happens through the official online portal.
Candidates are shortlisted based on their academic performance:
The Training Unit of MoSPI handles selection for Group A internships, while regional offices manage Group B selections.
Selected candidates will be notified through email and through the internship portal.
If you are still exploring research internships this year, you might also want to look at programs like the IISc Bangalore CBRAIN Internship 2026 or the CSIR IMMT Summer Internship 2026. Both offer hands‑on research exposure as well.
At the end of the internship, students must submit a detailed report describing their work, observations, and recommendations.
After successful completion, the respective office issues an official internship certificate.
This certificate can be useful if you plan to apply for research programs, data science roles, or higher studies later.
The MoSPI NIOS Internship 2026 is not flashy. There are no huge stipends or fancy tech company logos.
But if you care about data, public policy, or economics, the experience is genuinely valuable. Working with real national datasets gives you insights that textbooks simply cannot.
Just remember the deadline. Applications close on 20 March 2026.
