If you're a Chemical Engineering student hunting for serious research exposure this summer, here's something worth checking out. The ICT Mumbai Summer Internship 2026 just opened applications, and the intake is tiny.
Only 15 undergraduate students will be selected to spend six weeks at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Institute of Chemical Technology (formerly UDCT). That means the selection is competitive, but the research exposure can be genuinely valuable if you're planning higher studies or R&D roles.
Quick heads-up though. There's no stipend and no hostel accommodation. You'll need to manage your stay and expenses in Mumbai yourself. Still, many students apply every year simply because ICT's Chemical Engineering department has a strong reputation in academia and industry.

If you're exploring multiple summer research options this year, it also helps to look at our complete guide to Summer Internships 2026. A lot of IIT and research lab programs close their applications around the same time.
The eligibility rules are straightforward, but strict. The department only wants students who already have a solid foundation in Chemical Engineering fundamentals.
That second rule matters. If you're currently in second year, you'll need to wait until next year.
Also, the internship is purely research focused under ICT Chemical Engineering faculty. So your academic record and motivation statement will matter quite a bit.
The internship runs for six weeks during the summer break.
This timing overlaps with most Indian universities' summer vacation, which is why the program keeps the window short and focused.
If you want to compare similar research internships, you might also want to check the IIT Kanpur SURGE Internship 2026 and the IIT Madras Summer Fellowship Programme 2026. Both are popular among engineering students applying for summer research.
This is where many students get surprised.
The ICT Mumbai Summer Internship 2026 does not provide a stipend. Participants will need to manage all expenses during the internship period.
There's another important condition. Hostel accommodation is not available for summer interns.
So before applying, make sure you can arrange accommodation in Mumbai for about six weeks. The department specifically asks applicants to check housing availability beforehand.
Honestly, this requirement discourages some students. But for those planning a research career or preparing for MS/PhD applications, working with ICT faculty can still be a strong academic experience.
The application form asks for several academic documents and details. Prepare these in advance so you don't rush near the deadline.
The motivation statement is particularly important. Keep it focused. Explain your interest in Chemical Engineering research, the areas you want to explore, and what you hope to learn during the internship.
I've seen students treat this part casually. Don't. A thoughtful SOP often makes the difference when only 15 seats are available.
The Department of Chemical Engineering will review all applications after the deadline.
Since the intake is limited to just 15 students, the evaluation usually considers:
The final list of selected candidates will be published on the ICT Mumbai website on or before 15 April 2026.
The department also notes that the decision of the Head of Department will be final.
A few small steps can make your application stronger.
