Getting a DRDO internship is tough. Seats are limited, deadlines are short, and most students hear about them a little too late.
This one is no different. The DRDO DIHAR Paid Internship 2026 just opened with only 3 seats available for B.E./B.Tech students. The internship runs for six months at the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) in Leh Ladakh and comes with a monthly stipend.
If you are in your final year of engineering and want hands‑on exposure inside a defence research lab, this is worth a serious look. Also, if you're exploring other DRDO labs hiring interns this year, you might want to check the DRDO VRDE Paid Internship 2026 or the DRDO CAIR Internship 2026. Different labs, different seats, same competitive selection.

Quick heads‑up: DRDO internships across labs fill quickly because the seat count is tiny. Some labs release 20–50 seats, but DIHAR has only three this year.
If you want to explore more defence lab internships, check our complete guide to DRDO Internships 2026 where we track multiple labs opening applications.
The Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) is a DRDO laboratory that focuses on technologies and research related to high‑altitude and cold‑arid environments. The institute works on scientific solutions relevant to defence operations in extreme terrains.
Because of its location and research focus, DIHAR projects often deal with field testing, environmental challenges, and specialized engineering applications. That means interns here get exposure to problems that most university labs simply don't handle.
Only a small group of engineering students can apply. DRDO has defined the eligibility clearly.
Also note: DRDO clearly states that no equivalent qualification will be considered. If the branch doesn't match the listed disciplines, the application won't move forward.
The DRDO DIHAR Paid Internship 2026 is open to the following engineering disciplines:
Honestly, these are the same core branches DRDO tends to prefer across many labs. If you want to see how other DRDO centres structure their internships, the DRDO R&DE(E) Pune Internship 2026 is another example with larger intake.
The stipend for the DRDO DIHAR internship is ₹5,000 per month. It is not huge, but that is fairly typical for government research internships.
There are a few conditions attached to the payment:
The internship can also be extended by 8 to 10 additional months for project work, but that extension does not include a stipend.
The internship runs for 6 months.
A completion certificate is issued only after the full duration is successfully finished. If a student leaves midway, two things happen. No stipend is paid, and the completion certificate will not be issued.
DRDO labs are strict about this. I've seen students underestimate the commitment, then struggle to balance semester schedules with a long research internship.
Students must send their application through email along with several documents. Missing even one usually leads to rejection.
The official application format, reference letter template, and undertakings are included in the official document. You can download it here: Download Advertisement and Application Form.
This letter must be printed on the college letterhead and signed by the Principal or Head of the Institution.
The letter confirms several things:
Without this letter, the application will not be accepted.
The official document also contains two mandatory undertakings that selected students must sign during joining.
1. Indian Official Secrets Act Undertaking
Students must acknowledge that they understand the provisions of the Indian Official Secrets Act, 1923. Since DRDO is a defence research organization, confidentiality is strictly enforced.
2. IT Rules and Regulations Undertaking
Interns must also sign a declaration stating they will follow the IT rules and regulations applicable to the Ministry of Defence.
These undertakings become part of the joining documentation if you get selected.
The selection process is merit based.
Applications are evaluated based on academic performance in previous semesters. Shortlisted candidates may then be called for an online or telephonic interview / interaction.
Selected students will receive joining instructions through the email address provided in their application.
If selected, students must bring several original documents for verification:
Original documents are verified and returned immediately after verification.
If you're planning to apply, don't wait until the final day. Email applications sometimes bounce or get delayed, and DRDO doesn't entertain late submissions.
