About the Team
United Airlines' Digital Technology team builds and maintains large-scale technology solutions powered by innovative architectures, analytics, and digital platforms. The Analytics and Innovation (Ai) team focuses on solving complex business challenges through advanced analytics and cross-functional collaboration across areas such as Airport Operations, Revenue Management, Digital Products, Human Resources, and more.
Generative AI Interns will work closely with Data Scientists and AI Engineers to support the research, development, and testing of LLM-powered solutions. The role is suited for candidates who are passionate about the evolving AI ecosystem and interested in rapid experimentation, model evaluation, and enterprise AI applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior Data Scientists and AI Engineers to prototype Generative AI applications, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, intelligent document processing, and internal AI tools.
- Write clean, secure, and well-documented code for experimental AI workloads while supporting reusable and enterprise-ready integrations.
- Perform exploratory data analysis, preprocessing, and feature engineering to support AI model development and grounding.
- Assist with evaluating model performance, including accuracy, context retention, and hallucination reduction techniques.
- Document technical findings, methodologies, and experiment outcomes, and present insights to peers and technical leaders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, ongoing or completed, in Engineering, Technology, Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Economics, or a related technical discipline.
- Availability to commit to a minimum internship duration of 6 months.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL with practical experience using data analysis libraries such as Pandas and NumPy.
- Understanding of machine learning fundamentals, neural networks, Large Language Models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
- Knowledge of secure coding practices, AI safety concepts, enterprise data privacy, prompt injection risks, and secure API handling.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous internship experience in Data Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, or Advanced Analytics.
- Familiarity with GenAI orchestration tools such as LangChain and LlamaIndex, along with LLM APIs including OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, or Google Gemini.
- Exposure to agentic workflows, multi-agent systems, tool-calling architectures, and vector databases such as ChromaDB, FAISS, or Pinecone.
- Experience using Git, version control systems, and Jupyter Notebook workflows.
- Participation in hackathons, technical blogging, personal AI projects, or open-source contributions related to Generative AI.
