Job Description
Embedded Engineer I
Industrial Safety – “Safety That’s Always on the Lookout”
Accidental gas leaks pose a huge threat to properties, environment and human life. Honeywell manufactures a comprehensive range of gas detection products dedicated to all types of industrial facilities, from smaller boiler rooms to large petrochemical plants and oil refineries.
Honeywell’s wide range of technologies and devices – gas detectors, flame detectors, natural gas alarms – provide exceptional protection at every level, ensuring the most favorable coverage, detection, hazard mitigation and life protection.
We are seeking a skilled Embedded / FPGA Engineer dedicated to developing advanced embedded, FPGA-enabled signal acquisition and control systems for safety-critical gas and flame detection products. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in embedded system design, FPGA-based data acquisition and signal-processing implementation, laser driver development, and a good working knowledge of laser spectroscopy principles, while adhering to functional safety requirements and relevant standards such as IEC 61508 Safety Integrity Level 2 and EN 60079-29-1.
Key Responsibilities
- As part of Industrial Safety Engineering group, you will be one among the team designing new products for Industrial Safety Line of business with key focus on Fixed gas and Flame detection sensor solutions and Controllers.
- Participate in the development of embedded software and systems, ensuring they meet functional safety requirements. Design and implement new features in embedded platforms, managing the entire software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis to implementation and testing.
- Develop and execute test plans for embedded software, including unit tests, integration tests, and system tests. Use automated testing frameworks and tools to ensure high test coverage and effective testing strategies. Analyze testing results to identify and resolve issues swiftly.
- Develop and validate FPGA-based interfaces and processing blocks for high-speed sensor data capture, timing control, filtering, co-adding, and real-time signal-processing workflows.
- Support laser driver development activities including current/temperature control interfaces, modulation control, protection features, calibration support, and lab validation for optical sensing platforms. Collaborate with optical and spectroscopy teams to translate laser spectroscopy requirements into embedded firmware, FPGA logic, control algorithms, diagnostic utilities, and test automation.
- Additional responsibilities include proof-of-concept firmware development, FPGA/SoC bring-up support, high-speed data acquisition software applications, laser driver control firmware, technical report generation, documentation, and progress reporting.
Qualifications
Qualification: A Masters degree or Bachelor degree in Electronics Engineering with 0 to 3 years of experience with inclination towards Embedded System design and control systems.
Essential qualifications:
- Proficiency and hands-on experience in C, Python or C++ programming.
- Experience in firmware development for Cortex M3/M4 and ARM V7 on cross compilers like IAR Embedded Workbench, Eclipse, and MPLAB.
- Proficiency in working with wired communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, WDT, and TIMER.
- Ability to statistically analyze data with software tools like MS Excel/MATLAB/Minitab.
- Good know-how of laser spectroscopy, optical sensing, interferometric signal acquisition, spectral analysis, gas absorption measurement, and lab-based validation of electro-optical systems.
- Experience or strong interest in laser driver development, including current drivers, TEC/temperature control, modulation, protection circuits, calibration, and embedded control loops.
- Knowledge of FPGA-based data acquisition, high-speed ADC interfacing, clocking, buffering, DMA/streaming concepts, and real-time processing pipelines will be an added advantage.
- Hands-on exposure to FPGA design and verification using VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog, FPGA development tools, timing closure concepts, and hardware debugging with logic analyzers or embedded analyzers.
- Strong understanding of signal processing techniques and advanced mathematical concepts, including FFT-based analysis, filtering, linear algebra, calculus, and statistical analysis.
