Meet the Team

The Common Hardware Group (CHG) at Cisco is looking for software engineers to join the Diagnostic/BSP team responsible for reliability and performance across Cisco hardware platforms. The team develops software used in Cisco network switches and routers that support advanced application awareness and enable flexible, agile network infrastructure.

These platforms help handle complex workloads including AI and ML demands. The role offers opportunities to expand technical expertise while collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams across Cisco.

Your Impact

  • Architect and develop BIOS, BSP, and diagnostic software for Cisco core and edge routing products.
  • Design, build, and test device drivers for FPGA and high speed networking peripherals.
  • Create and execute comprehensive software test plans.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to debug hardware prototypes and validate software functionality.
  • Drive innovative solutions that combine software and hardware technologies across Cisco products.
  • Provide deep technical insight during complex consultations and contribute expertise internally and externally.
  • Help shape technology directions and industry trends that strengthen Cisco's competitive position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 1 to 3 years of experience, or a Master's degree with 0 to 3 years of experience.
  • Hands-on programming experience with C, C++, and Python for embedded systems.
  • Experience in hardware and device driver development including Linux hardware bring-up, multithreading, event handling, and state machine implementation.
  • Exposure to technologies such as SONiC, ONIE, BMC, IPMI, or Redfish.
  • Experience developing and debugging embedded systems using protocols like I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe, and GPIO.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using kernel debugging tools such as GDB or KGDB.
  • Background in board bring-up, validation, and debugging for embedded platforms.
  • Ability to build software systems from concept through delivery for high bandwidth or large scale systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting software issues across kernel modules and application layers.
  • Familiarity with system design collaboration, specification writing, and requirement reviews.
  • Knowledge of AI or ML concepts, Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking protocols, network processors, optical networking, secure boot, open source tools, CMIS, and SFF standards such as SFP or QSFP.
