Overview

Job Description

Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) brings together American Express' merchant- and network-related businesses to deliver differentiated value to merchants, partners and Card Members. The organization manages relationships with merchants that accept American Express, operates the company's payment network and supports bank partnerships globally.

In support of GMNS's mission, Global Governance, Risk, Remediation, and Operations is focused on building a resilient and efficient operational foundation for critical merchant experiences, strengthening oversight of merchant and network processes, and advancing operational excellence. As part of this organization, Global Merchant Account Operations & Resilience supports effective oversight of merchant account setup, account management and maintenance activities.

The team is improving how merchant accounts, account relationships and critical merchant data are maintained, governed and scaled throughout the merchant lifecycle. This includes hierarchy information, cancellation information, account classifications and other key data attributes used across American Express. The team strengthens data quality and controls, simplifies operational processes, and explores automation, analytics and AI-enabled approaches that reduce manual effort and improve servicing outcomes.

As an apprentice, you will support well-defined transformation and operational-improvement assignments across merchant hierarchy, account maintenance, governance, controls and automation. You will gain practical experience in business analysis, data analysis, process documentation, testing and cross-functional delivery while working under the guidance of experienced colleagues.

The apprentice will provide incremental capacity to progress well-defined initiatives that improve account maintenance, data integrity and governance, while enabling experienced colleagues to remain focused on higher-complexity priorities and delivery. The ideal candidate will demonstrate analytical curiosity, clear communication and an interest in solving data and operational challenges.

This is an apprenticeship position hired under the Apprentices Act. The apprentice will complete structured, supervised work and learning assignments with support from experienced colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn merchant account maintenance and hierarchy processes, and document process steps, data requirements, pain points and improvement opportunities.
  • Support analysis of merchant and operational data to identify patterns, data-quality gaps, control weaknesses and opportunities for process improvement.

  • Help maintain governance materials, project plans, action trackers, decision guides, standard operating procedures, business requirements and decision logs.
  • Support the assessment and design of scalable account-maintenance capabilities for high-volume updates, including common-value changes, account-specific changes, structural migrations and rules-based remediation.
  • Help document and test requirements for validations, approvals, audit trails, exception handling and rollback to support controlled account-maintenance activity.
  • Assist with reviewing account-assignment rules and system dependencies to identify restrictions that may disrupt servicing, and support improvements that strengthen maintenance accuracy and data integrity.
  • Support consistent global oversight and governance for proactive account cancellations, including process documentation, ownership, controls, monitoring and reporting.
  • Help maintain and improve inventories of critical merchant data elements, supporting information and decision guidance.
  • Assist with investigating and remediating data issues through structured analysis, documentation, change coordination and outcome validation.
  • Support the development of controls and monitoring that improve the accuracy and completeness of merchant information during account setup and ongoing maintenance.
  • Assist with data extraction, transformation, analysis and reporting using Excel, SQL or other available tools, and help define measures used to evaluate outcomes and identify trends.
  • Work alongside technology and analytics colleagues on AI-enabled tools that help users better understand merchant information and make more consistent data-selection decisions.
  • Help prepare user guidance, training materials and communications that support consistent account-maintenance and data-selection decisions.
  • Work with Operations, Product, Technology, Analytics and Control Management colleagues to gather information, document requirements and follow up on agreed actions.
  • Prepare clear analyses, project updates, reports and presentation materials under guidance from experienced team members.
  • Provide limited operational support where needed to build practical understanding of processes and validate proposed improvements.
